How We Restore Tiled Floors

Tiled floors are a great choice of flooring for any home due to their natural ability to resist stains and wear and tear.

In contrast to carpets, tiles can be mopped to remove surface dirt and are an excellent choice for hallways and kitchens due to the higher level of foot traffic these areas are exposed to.

But despite their durability, tiles and grout do start to show their age as soils become embedded.

At this point, many homeowners attempt to clean them using steam mops and other similar gadgets, usually without much success. Indeed, once a floor is heavily soiled, only a full professional clean will achieve a satisfactory restoration.

Each type of tile and stone has unique characteristics that dictate how to achieve the best cleaning results. But our process is quite similar for each type of floor.

While some stone floors may require separate processes such as honing or grinding, here is an outline of our general tile cleaning process:

1. Vacuum the flooring to remove any surface dirt and grit.
2. Apply a neutral cleaning chemical to the tiles and grout lines, leaving it dwell for 10 minutes in order to start breaking down the ingrained soils and stains. 
3. After 10 minutes, we use a rotary machine with attached pads or brushes to agitate to the tiles and loosen the soiling.
4. In addition to using the rotary machine, we tackle the grout lines by hand using grout brushes..
5. The dirt and moisture is then extracted using a powerful wet vacuum. 
6. We repeat this process in each area a couple of times until all the soiling and dirt is removed from the tiles and grout.
7. Once the floor is clean, we facilitate drying using air movers, and if appropriate, the floor will be sealed.
8. Additional processes will be required for polishing, removing etch marks and scrstches and filling any holes and cracks.
