Restoring Travertine Floor Tiles

admin

Travertine is a beautiful stone that has become increasingly popular with homeowners.

When clean, it adds a light and uplifting feel to a home and compliments most styles of decor, whether it be traditional or contemporary.

Like many natural stone tiles, after a few years it begins to show its age as holes can appear and the tiles and grout become soiled.

Once heavily soiled, it is difficult to remove the ingrained dirt and stains by merely mopping or steaming the floor and it will require professional cleaning to bring it back to its original condition.

The good news, is that both honed and tumbled travertine tiles are able to be restored to a beautiful condition with the right knowledge and equipment.

(Take a look at the before and after photos below of a floor we restored in Cardiff).

How we restore travertine

Each travertine floor is unique, and some customers desire a particular finish, but here is a general process that we might follow to restore travertine floors in Cardiff and throughout South Wales:

  • Vacuum the floor to remove any surface soils and grit.
  • Apply a specialist cleaning chemical onto the tiles and grout and leave it dwell for a short time in order to start breaking down the ingrained soils.
  • Working in sections, we then use a rotary machine with attached brushes to release the soils and grime.
  • For each section, the grout lines have additional cleaning attention using hand brushes.
  • The soil slurry is then extracted using a wet vacuum.
  • We then repeat this process until all soiling is removed from the tiles and grout (some floors will require multiple passes).
  • Once clean and dried, the floor would be sealed to protect it.
  • Additional processes will be required if polishing or the removal of etch marks and scractches is necessary.

Travertine holes & cracks

Travertine tiles can develop holes and cracks over time.

This can be caused by movement, weakness and ageing. If the holes and cracks are not filled then it can cause the tiles to weaken, which can cause the development of further cracks.

These holes can vary from a few mm in diameter, to several cms.

We can fill travertine cracks and holes using a colour matched resin filler or grout.

In addtion to cracks and holes, we are able to regrout any missing sections of grout.
